A Potentially Monumental Music Rumor...Pretty Much Shot Down as I Read It...

Well, for about 2 seconds today, I thought that Velvet Revolver found their new lead singer. The group of former Guns N' Roses members: guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Matt Sorum, and non-GNR member guitarist David Kushner had a very public split with lead singer Scott Weiland earlier this year. You won't hear me complain about that though, since it led to Weiland's reunion with his original band, Stone Temple Pilots, who I've been ranting and raving about like a little girl for the past couple of weeks.

This new singer was rumored to be none other than Lenny Kravitz, another rock icon I am a huge musical fan of. This would have been a crazy pairing that could have led the way for what may have been VR's best album yet. Lenny has impeccable songwriting capabilities and is a wizard in the studio, playing every instrument under the sun, including some VR haven't utilized before, such as the piano and saxophone. However, shortly after the British newspaper, The Sun broke the story, the rumors were shot down by Lenny's people who told Rolling Stone magazine he hasn't been recording with the band, though he is great friends with them.

Of all the latest Velvet Revolver new lead singer rumors, this one made the most sense. Lenny and Slash were classmates in high school at Beverly Hills High in the 1980's, Slash played extensively on Lenny's second album "Mama Said" in 1991, right in the midst of Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion peak, and Lenny even opened for GNR during that same era. The first rumor of Sebastian Bach made no sense to be since he's great friends with Axl Rose, who hates his former band mates like I hate Oprah. And I don't know where the rumor of Royston Langdon from Superdrag came from, thankfully that wasn't true. The only tune I know by them, was the mid 90's rock hit, "Who Sucked Out the Feeling."

As much as I love Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N' Roses in their original incarnations, I would like to see Velvet Revolver get back in the saddle for a new album with a suitable replacement for the incomparable Scott Weiland. I'm a big fan of Slash, Duff, and Matt, and getting someone like Lenny Kravitz would immediately make them one of the biggest bands on the planet. It would definitely be better than Axl's abomination he's calling "Guns N' Roses" now that's comprised of a bunch of second rate musicians who he can shine brightest in front of. And, it would probably be right up there with Stone Temple Pilots.

Well, too bad for that. Hopefully Lenny is just trying to keep this under wraps and they're working on something colossal.
